Plastic Surgery With A Plastic Surgeon!

Recently, the Colombian Society of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery SCCP launched the public health campaign to which he gave the name mentioned in the title of this Blog.

Starting from the important and well-achieved campaign, whose objective is to avoid jeopardizing the health and life of those who wish to have cosmetic surgery, raise awareness that Colombians do not improvise when they decide to undergo cosmetic surgery and seek professionals suitable, today I replicate 4 infallible aspects when looking for a plastic surgeon and thinking about having made an aesthetic intervention, information shared by Carlos Enrique Hoyos Salazar, president of the SCCP through the El Frente magazine:

1^st. Choose a suitable plastic surgeon. Every Plastic Surgeon must have:

• Undergraduate and undergraduate medical degree from a specialist in aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery that is obtained after a minimum of 4 years of postgraduate degree in a university service of plastic surgery approved by the ICFES in Colombia, or validated by the Ministries of Education and National or International Health.
• Always verify that the surgeon’s specialty has been legally obtained, the name of the university that awarded the degree and that his name appears in the medical record.
• The professional must belong to a recognized scientific society such as the Colombian Society of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery; This is a guarantee of a constant process of study, preparation and improvement of the skill in the practice of his profession.
• Verify that the surgeon’s website has a detailed description of their educational and professional experience. Confirm that the surgeon will always be available to assist you during the postoperative period.
• Verify that he is linked to a recognized medical institution, that the domicile of the city where he performs cosmetic plastic surgery is stable, not just temporary and legally registered.
• This doctor must also have a group of certified anesthesiologists, for cases in which the use of general anesthesia is required for surgery and he must be supported by a team of trained professionals to support you in the postoperative care.
• Ask yourself: Is there empathy between the surgeon and me? It is important that there is.

2^nd. How the operating room should be: The place where surgery is performed should be adequate.

• Only clinics and hospitals with rigorous hygiene conditions and a medical infrastructure legally authorized for this purpose should provide this service.
• The establishment must have a registry of the Secretary of Health of the city where it is located, and registered in the network of medical service providers, such as IPS, and monitored by the Superintendence of Health.
• They must provide comprehensive recovery service with an anesthesiologist until the patient leaves; In addition, offer the option of medical insurance for possible complications, and have an agreement with other institutions for: hospital rooms, emergency care and for the use of an intensive care unit.
• The sites enabled for such service always have a blue star that identifies them and certifies that they have legal qualification in plastic surgery for consultation and surgery.
• Keep in mind that if the institution does not have a hospitalization service, you must have permanent ambulance service.

3^rd. The surgical plan: The chosen plastic surgeon must explain in detail which regions of the body will intervene.

• You must first be explained the risks, listened to your concerns and requests and explained clearly whether or not to have made a certain procedure. The ideal doctor will listen to your expectations and make projections and suggestions based on his experience as a specialist.
• Avoid believing all the publicity you see; some can be misleading. Many times the patient is promised unreal results. When reading an advertising guideline, keep in mind that in aesthetic plastic surgeries a very low price can mean a very high risk, that is of your own health.
• A successful surgery requires experience and knowledge, and top quality materials and equipment that always have a high cost.

4^th. Your health condition: Before undergoing plastic surgery, the health professional will require that the patient have a series of physical and laboratory medical exams.

• Under no circumstances allow a procedure to be carried out if you have any type of decompensation or inconsistency in your exams. For example, if your hemoglobin level is higher or lower than necessary, or you have a high sugar level without proper treatment or other complications that make it impossible; distrust if a surgeon wants to operate even when it is clear that his health is not optimal.
• A good surgeon will meet from the beginning with the patient, he will elaborate a detailed medical history of each person to whom he evaluates and will not delegate the provision of information to his personal assistant, secretary or commercial agent.

Finally, and as a summary, I place special emphasis on what Carlos Hoyos, president of the SCCP tells us: “Users must be responsible when contacting a plastic surgeon, it is necessary to warn and reiterate to Colombians that they had better be attentive not to be scammed in their good will, so that they do not fall into inexperienced hands or fall victim to false promises that can have dire results for your health. A decision of cosmetic plastic surgery must always have the four essential aspects to be made: the doctor, the clinic, the surgical plan and the good health condition of the patient”.
