In the book The Two Minds of the Human Being, it is stated that people possess two minds, one conscious (rational, objective) and the other unconscious (emotions, thoughts, feelings). The world we perceive is conditioned by our mental structure, that is, an image built from how the mind interacts with what really happens; this is how we experience reality through our internal and external experiences.
The mind and body are closely connected, as we have the ability to develop feelings or sensations in our body from a thought. For example, stress can generally cause tension and pain in muscles and head, as well as increase blood pressure and heart rate, as the body reacts as if it were under attack. Likewise, constant pain or health problems can affect the emotions, causing depression, anxiety and alteration of the nervous system in general, preventing the body from recovering in a timely manner. However, strengthening the mind and cultivating positive thoughts may have the opposite effect, significantly improving health.
In the subconscious mind, we harbor strong emotional experiences, which activate memories, emotions and/or blockages in situations that may remind us of that experience, activating an alert system in the body, even if the current situation does not represent a real danger. According to research, the brain has the capacity to produce, from thoughts, feelings and expectations, different substances such as endorphins (natural painkillers) and gamma globulin (strengthens the immune system), which help the body's recovery process.
One of the best known evidences to demonstrate the power of the mind and its ability to generate states of well-being and healing, is through the placebo effect, a treatment that has no therapeutic effect on the body, however, achieves that the patient generates an improvement in their symptoms. This is achieved through the person's beliefs that the treatment has any effect, thus producing the chemicals that the mind needs to help the body heal.
Our mind has an extremely important potential for our overall well-being, and it is in the hands of every human being to discover and enhance it, to achieve greater harmony in all aspects of life. To begin to generate changes in our mind and the way we perceive the different situations we face, it is important to reprogram the mind through alternative therapies and tools that can help us as individuals to identify the blockages that take place in the subconscious, allowing emotions to flow and transform attitudes and thoughts. Below, we share with you some of the tools we can use to reprogram the mind:
First, with the help of meditation and/or guided visualization, we can generate calm states, reducing stress, anxiety and increasing our confidence and optimism towards life. In the Beaumont integrative medicine program, they have used this technique in a large number of patients who are about to undergo surgery, as it has shown excellent results in minimizing the fear that patients may feel, showing in turn, better results in their recovery process.
On the other hand, by changing the language we use towards ourselves, we will be able to create a more positive and empathic environment, awakening our self-acceptance, recognition and self-love. To adopt this practice, we can begin by expressing affirmations such as, I am enough, I am healing, I can do it, etc.
