Care and treatment of surgical scar

Healing is an amazing biological phenomenon in which the body works hard to restore the tissues affected by a surgical incision. This process unfolds in three distinct phases, covering a minimum period of 12 months:

1. inflammatory phase: Begins after suturing, marked by an increase in vascularization and platelets. In some cases, a superficial scab forms as part of this inflammatory process.

2. Proliferative Phase: Here, regeneration gains momentum with collagen production and fibroblast action. This stage is crucial for proper wound tension and healing.

3. Remodeling Phase: Beginning at one month, this phase contemplates the reabsorption of collagen, allowing the complete remodeling of the scar. This process can last up to a year or more, varying according to the individual biological response.

Post-surgical scars, being deeper, require specific care for a prolonged period of time. Asepsis plays a determining role in the prevention of infections or other complications. Suture removal should be done with caution, between days 10 and 15, depending on the evolution of each case.

Maintaining the skin's hydrolipidic film is essential before and after the surgical procedure. The use of creams with urea, lactate and ceramides promotes optimal conditions for successful healing. In addition, sun protection against UV rays is essential during the first 12 months to avoid hyperpigmentation.

Cremas y geles compuestos por silicona, glicerina, agua termal, pantenol, ácido hialurónico, calamina y óxido de zinc son útiles para mantener la elasticidad e hidratación de la cicatriz, reduciendo enrojecimiento, picazón y molestias.

Creams and gels composed of silicone, glycerin, thermal water, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, calamine and zinc oxide are useful to maintain the elasticity and hydration of the scar, reducing redness, itching and discomfort.

To improve the appearance of the scar, specific treatments are used from the initial stages of scarring. Massaging the scar promotes lymphatic drainage, preventing swelling and softening the scar. The application of pressure reduces the possibility of scar hypertrophy. The use of pressotherapy products requires dry skin for the application of surgical adhesives or silicone strips, according to medical indications. Creams and gels composed of silicone, glycerin, thermal water, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, calamine and zinc oxide are useful to maintain the elasticity and hydration of the scar, reducing redness, itching and discomfort.

It is important to keep in mind that the tone of the scar will evolve over time, from red tones to the possible adaptation to the natural skin tone.

As a crucial recommendation, it is advisable to avoid smoking both before and after the surgical procedure, as it can negatively affect the healing process due to decreased oxygen levels in the blood. By following these guidelines, you can contribute significantly to successful healing and an improved aesthetic appearance.
